MC-IF Member, Intel, to Showcase Lunar Lake Processor Integration with Versatile Video Coding at NAB Show 2025

LAS VEGAS - April 6, 2025 - PRLog -- At NAB Show 2025, Intel Corporation, a member of the Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF), will demonstrate the latest advancements in Versatile Video Coding (VVC) hardware decoding, showcasing enhanced video playback on the Lunar Lake processor.

The demonstration will feature 8K video running on an Intel laptop that is integrated with the next-generation technology from Intel. According to Narifumi Iwamoto, Principal Engineer at Intel, VVC-enabled hardware decoding delivers five times better video playback at 60 frames-per-second in comparison to previous iterations of software-only decoding.

Intel will also provide a second Intel laptop to demonstrate 4K video running through software-based decoding to clarify the difference between hardware and software decoding in terms of performance and power consumption.

Supporting a Premium Video Experience

Intel's demonstration shows how an excellent video playback experience can be achieved while viewing 8K content on a commercially available laptop.

By combining the power of the Intel's Lunar Lake processor and the VVC standard's higher compression efficiencies and improved video quality at lower bitrates, attendees can see the clarity and responsiveness in the delivery of the video content. The additional benefits of this integration will also be evident as a result of reduced power consumption and decreased fan noise on laptops while displaying resource-intensive 8K video.

This showcase illustrates how broadcasters, streaming service providers and software developers can deploy new solutions and applications to enhance content delivery while maintaining high-quality experiences and optimizing operational efficiencies.

According to Yi-jen Chiu, Senior Principal Engineer, Media Architect at Intel, the form factor is significant.

"This type of speed and performance is expected from equipment that might go into a server rack or mobile production truck. We have integrated this technology into a highly accessible laptop that can easily be incorporated into broadcasting or streaming service workflows," Yi-Jen stated.

Iwamoto pointed out that this demonstration should also capture the interest of people and organizations associated with open source projects.

"There are a great number of developers that are using open source libraries or programs to optimize codecs or improve their efficiency. Readily available VVC-enabled hardware allows these open source communities to experiment and develop applications with VVC, further supporting the evolution of video content creation and distribution," he said.
